Ready, Set, Run: Free and Easy Running Programs
Friday June 27, 2025 8:15am - 8:45am EDT
This session will take a deep dive into different running programs such as New York Road Runners and Marathon Kids. It will talk about the different incentives (for both students and organizations), opportunities, as well as curriculum/activities used through New York Road Runners. It is a free K-12 health and wellness program. My school was recognized as a top 5% in the Nation New York Road Runners Program. Participants will also participate in many NYRR physical activities/programming. I will also talk a lot about the opportunities with the Marathon Kids programming. They now have a free run tracking program as well as many lessons/curriculum. With the free run tracking program, it gives great data to have conversation on goal setting and becoming the best you in regards to health, running, and long term athletic development. I utilized the new Girls Movement Program which is a new initiative establishing running clubs tailored exclusively for 4th through 8th grade girls as they navigate the crucial transition through middle school. I will take participants through a lesson that builds community through teambuilding, pacing, athletic activity, and SEL. This character building program can be adapted and used with more than just 4th - 8th grade and not only for females. In addition to these free programs, I will also share the 100 Mile Club, AMPED as well as different running resources I have used over the years in the school setting.

Reflective strategies for assessment in Health and PE
Friday June 27, 2025 8:15am - 8:45am EDT
Traditional fitness tests like the PACER often emphasize performance over personal growth. This session will explore self-reflective assessment strategies that empower students to set goals, track progress, and develop lifelong wellness habits. By shifting from one-size-fits-all testing to personalized reflection, educators can foster intrinsic motivation, self-awareness, and a deeper connection to health and physical education. Learn practical methods to integrate self-assessment tools that prioritize individual progress over competition, creating a more inclusive and meaningful approach to student wellness.

Project-Based Learning in Secondary Schools and Higher Ed
Friday June 27, 2025 10:15am - 11:15am EDT
The Assessment of Physical Activity class at CU takes students through an experiential learning opportunity throughout the entirety of the class. In this class, students design assessment plans based on their respective interests and future career goals. They will find participants for their study, go through the IRB process, develop and implement a baseline assessment, collect results, create goals based on those results, develop and implement formative assessments throughout the project, collect data, and report results. At the conclusion of the project they have a paper they have worked on throughout the term and will design posters to present at a student-led research fair at the end of the term. Students' experiences in this class range from assessment motor skills, manipulative skills, health-related fitness, and sport-related fitness skills.

Health Beyond Health Class
Friday June 27, 2025 12:30pm - 1:30pm EDT
Health education doesn’t stop at the classroom door—and neither should your curriculum. This session introduces “Health Beyond Health Class,” a new section of the K–5 HealthSmart program designed to extend health learning into the broader school environment. Grounded in the Whole School, Whole Community, Whole Child (WSCC) model and Coordinated School Health (CSH) principles, this approach empowers educators to integrate health education across multiple domains of school life—from physical education and nutrition services to counseling, school climate, and family engagement.
Participants will explore practical strategies and tools that support a school-wide culture of wellness, including interactive digital lessons, visual reinforcement materials, and cross-curricular activities. Learn how HealthSmart’s new resources can help your school align health education with broader wellness goals, engage staff across departments, and foster student advocacy and leadership in health.
Whether you're a classroom teacher, administrator, or district leader, this session will equip you with actionable ideas to make health education a shared responsibility—and a school-wide success.

From Novice to Pro: Using Motor Learning Theory and Project Based Learning in Sport Management Education
Friday June 27, 2025 12:30pm - 1:30pm EDT
This presentation explores how Fitts and Posner’s (1967) motor learning theory—defining skill acquisition through cognitive, associative, and autonomous phases—can be adapted to enrich sport management education. Given the need for leadership, collaboration, decision-making, and problem-solving skills in sport management careers, this proposal argues that experiential learning strategies, particularly project-based learning (PBL), bridge the gap between classroom instruction and professional competencies.

Flag Football Comes to the Commonwealth with OPEN!
Friday June 27, 2025 1:45pm - 2:45pm EDT
Several high schools have started flag football programs throughout the Commonwealth and OPEN has free resources for elementary and middle school PE programs to help students prepare to pursue their dreams on the gridiron! This activity-based session will take participants through activities in OPEN’s free Flag Football modules for grades 3-5 and 6-8. Teachers will leave with tools to teach their students passing, catching, evading opponents, basic rules, and game play so students have the confidence and competence to participate moving to high school! Join in the action to learn more about the latest sport to hit the Commonwealth! This will be an active session with audience participation. We will get through about 6-8 inclusive activities to teach the basic skills and strategies to students. Alignment to standards, safety, and UDL options will be discussed. Activities can be scaled to any grade level.

Prevention is Possible: Strategies for Reducing Sexual Violence, Dating Violence, Bullying, and Harassment in Kentucky Schools
Friday June 27, 2025 3:00pm - 4:00pm EDT
We all want our students to be happy, healthy, and successful. Unfortunately, Kentucky youth face high rates of sexual violence, dating violence, bullying, and harassment. These experiences have lasting impacts on health, brain development, and academic success. Safe schools are essential for student health, well-being, and success. When students feel safe, they are more engaged, attend regularly, and perform better academically. Conversely, violence and harassment can severely hinder learning and lead to long-term emotional and physical challenges. The Kentucky Association of Sexual Assault Programs invites KY SHAPE members to learn about evidence-based prevention strategies to reduce violence in Kentucky schools and among Kentucky youth. We’ll discuss current rates of violence, the impact of these experiences on students, factors that influence the prevalence of violence, and how school policies and programming can shape safer environments. Learn how you, as a KY SHAPE member, can be part of the movement to create safer Kentucky schools.
