The Walking Classroom is an educational program of the national, non-profit organization, Alliance for a Healthier Generation. The Walking Classroom program aligns with academic standards, supports academic enrichment, increases physical activity, social emotional learning, and health literacy. Program benefits include improved learning, better engagement, clear improvements around mood and behavior, and improved health literacy skills. The Walking Classroom provides audio devices preloaded with literacy-based podcasts, suitable for grades 3rd – 8th, that students listen to while they walk. Podcasts topics include social studies, language arts, biographies, and science. Each podcast includes a brief health message to improve health literacy, and an embedded character value. Review of the Kentucky Academic Standards (KAS) for Health Education and the KAS for Physical Education
Thursday June 26, 2025 4:15pm - 4:45pm EDT
KRS 158.6453 calls for the Kentucky Department of Education (KDE) to implement a process for reviewing all academic standards. The schedule calls for one or two content areas to be reviewed each year, and every six years after that on a rotating basis. This session will look at the process for standards review through the lens of the Kentucky Academic Standards (KAS) for Health Education and the KAS for Physical Education. The standards are tentatively scheduled to go before the Kentucky Board of Education (KBE) in June 2025.
